Among the first Thoroughbreds brought to the sanctuary, arriving in December, 2014, this Florida bred’s very sweet and patient disposition has been instrumental in her surviving a myriad of health issues.
During her racing days from many years ago, Alina won seven races from 38 starts and earned over $160,000, while running predominantly in Illinois at Arlington and Hawthorne.
Forced into retirement from the track in 2005 with a leg injury, Alina served as a broodmare from 2006 to 2013, producing mostly Thoroughbreds, but also a Quarter Horse colt. Unbridled took her in, after she was diagnosed with fibroids in her uterus and was no longer able to breed.
Alina later developed an eye condition known as uveitis, or moon blindness, which can be very painful. After receiving treatment, it was determined that her best prognosis for a pain-free life would be to have her right eye surgically removed and replaced with a prosthesis. She made a full recovery, but then bumped and damaged her prosthetic eye, which required another surgery to remove it.
Alina again bounced back from that second procedure and was loving life until an injured stifle threatened to knock her down for the count in June of 2024. With the round-the-clock care from our staff, however, our beloved grand mare staged an incredible rally and is back to romping around the paddock with her BFF, Valentinothelover.
One of Unbridled's very dear supporters, Vickie Nitschke, is a faithful monthly sponsor of Alina.
