In one of the fastest rehomings you’ll see from the track to a retirement sanctuary, Macho Chrome, with the nationwide, grass-roots support led by California Chrome’s Legacy of Love, found himself at his forever home less than a week removed from his final career race at Grants Pass Downs in Oregon.
Prior to his lone start in Oregon, the California-bred gelding raced exclusively in his home state, mostly at Golden Gate Fields, where he made his two trips to the winner’s circle. For his 18-start career, Macho Chrome hit the board in half of his starts, while collecting almost $47,500 in earnings.
Macho Chrome began his racing tutelage under trainer Art Sherman of California Chrome fame, but then moved to the barn of son Steve Sherman after Art retired. Macho made 10 starts for Sherman, before being claimed for $12,500. The California Chrome group kept a close watch on Macho, however, and made sure that he was retired sound and with dignity.
Macho Chrome joins current Unbridled Spirits resident Mucho Chrome, who was rehomed to the ranch in 2020, after a similar social media fundraising blitz ensured his retirement and safe passage to the Midwest.
